The first day following getting any type of oral graft is often one that worries people before they have any type of oral surgery. It can be a time where you are tender, but there are things that you can do to lessen the amount of discomfort you face.

Here are some tips that we offer our patients following any type of oral graft to help you make it through the first day without any unnecessary discomfort.

Keep These In Mind When Healing Following an Oral Graft

The best way to manage the pain following an oral graft is to take the medications suggested on a regular schedule. Missing even one dose during that initial 24 hours can leave you in a lot of pain.

Expect a bit of bleeding right after your graft is placed. It usually doesn't last long, but when it happens, simply place a piece of gauze over the bleeding area and let it sit there for 30-45 minutes. Then, remove it and continue to rest.

Swelling is also normal after a graft. Using an ice pack or bag of peas is a great way to keep the swelling down from the outside. Use this method to reduce swelling for at least the first 24 hours.

Resting is necessary following an oral graft. While some people feel good enough to go back to work within a day of having a graft, it is still recommended that you rest 2-3 days after the graft is placed. The longer you rest, the faster you will heal.

Also, don't forget to drink and eat. You need to drink a lot more during your recovery, and eat soft foods that contain a lot of calories. Just don't use it a straw to drink with.
