When you think about caring for your mouth after oral surgery, the first thoughts that come to mind are usually medication and ice packs. While these are methods of caring for your mouth after surgery is complete, salt water is also recommended.

While this might seem like an odd choice for treatment, it actually works to fight bacteria as well as provides healing properties.

How to Rinse With Salt Water

To begin the rinsing process, you need a ½ teaspoon of salt and a glass of warm water. Mix the salt in the water thoroughly and then take small sips to swish around the mouth, paying close attention to the surgical area. Rinsing with salt water can be done two to four times a day after oral surgery is completed.

Salt Water Boosts Recovery Time

Salt is considered a natural healing element. When added with water and used to rinse your mouth, it can stop bacteria from spreading as well as boost the healing power of the affected area. When salt water is used, it will increase the blood flow to the surgical site which promotes healing properties.

Salt also works to stop the development of bacteria. It can be easy for bacteria to be present in the mouth after surgery. With salt water rinsing, bacteria are unable to grow and spread.

While you will start off eating soft foods, you will move on to foods you must chew. Salt water rinsing also helps to remove any food that can be stuck in your teeth. Such stuck foods can irritate the gums, which can lead to issues in the mouth or surgical area.

Be sure to use salt water for rinsing after your oral surgery to enjoy its many benefits. Our team is happy to answer any additional questions you may have about salt water rinsing or oral surgery cleaning needs.
