 Did you wake up this morning only to realize that you had a toothache? That is no way to start out your day. However, if as the day went on, you also developed a fever, you need to call our office right away. Typically, when you have a fever, that is your body's way of telling you that you have an infection of some sort. If you have a tooth that gets infected, that can really make you sick and leave many parts of your body worse for the wear. The Danger of Oral Infections That Go UntreatedWhen you have an oral infection, it is usually in the tooth or the socket of the tooth. This is where the pus builds up as your body tries to fight off the infection on its own. The problem is, your tooth and your tooth's socket are rigid. If the pressure builds up as the pus accumulates, this can cause the tooth or socket to crack and leak the infection elsewhere. If the pocket of pus bursts, it can cause bleeding, which means the infection is in direct contact with your blood stream. That allows the infection to spread anywhere in your body by means of your veins or arteries. If you have both a toothache and a fever, we need to see you. Call our office, day or night, and tell us what is going on. We will get you in as soon as we have an opening and take a look at what's going on in your mouth. If you have an abscess, which is the infection, we will help to treat it and get you feeling better. It does not take long for an infection to spread. Call us right away. |
