Some patients struggle with the decision to get dentures. They worry that friends or family might notice them. They might be embarrassed that their tooth loss was caused by poor oral hygiene. They also might be concerned the dentures might slip or move while they are talking drawing undo attention in public.
Is it Necessary or not?
Patients will sometimes use an adhesive to help keep their dentures in place. This holds them to the gums. This adhesive usually has to be reapplied several times a day, which can become tiresome to most patients.
In some cases, the dentures might move because they are not properly fitted to the patient's mouth. This can cause sores along the gumline and pain in the jaw and mouth. While dentures offer an improvement over missing teeth or damaged teeth which hurt when the patient chews, they do not provide the same experience or feel. One way to improve the biting or chewing power is by anchoring the dentures to a dental implant. The implant is actually secured to the jawbone just like a natural tooth and anchored in place. The dentures can then be fitted with clasps which can be clicked onto the implant. The dentures, once anchored to the implant, will not slip and will stay in place while the patient talks or eats, avoiding odd looks or comments when their dentures slip in public. There is also no odd clicking sound when eating with a denture plate that slips.
Dentures also need to be removed to clean them properly, but not the dental implant supported denture. These are permanently fixed in the mouth and can be cleaned with normal brushing and flossing techniques.
Dentures that are not fixed to a dental implant do not provide the proper jawbone stimulation which can cause bone loss. Find out if securing your dentures to a dental implant is the right decision for you.
